To all creatives and aspiring creatives — writers, visual artists, musicians, dancers, anyone whose creative practice has been stalling out: this one's for you.
You probably know The Artist's Way. Julia Cameron's 12-week program has helped millions of people get unstuck creatively, but most people who pick it up never finish. The morning pages get skipped. The artist dates feel indulgent. Week 4 becomes week 4 forever.
This 13-week course is built to fix that, through community, accountability, and the simple force of showing up alongside other people doing the same work.
I'm Akpanoluo, founder of Soundshop, a Williamsburg-based music community I've run for nine years. I've spent that time hosting community events around the city, mentoring musicians, and advising other community builders. The Artist's Way changed how I think about creative practice, and I built this program because I've watched people get a lot further when they're not doing it alone.
Who this is for
People who are ready to fundamentally change how they engage with their creativity and are looking for a community to keep them accountable. Action over rumination. If that resonates, you're in the right place. And if you feel some resistance reading this (the kind that's different from ambivalence), take that as a sign too.
What we'll do
We'll kick off the program by getting acquainted on the afternoon of Sunday June 7th at Club Curious in Williamsburg, either inside the speakeasy or out in the backyard under the trees if the weather's good.
Every Sunday afternoon thereafter on Zoom we'll review the week's chapter and exercises, talk through what's coming up (both breakthroughs and blocks), and close with an "offer and seek" round, where each person shares what they're looking for and what they can offer someone else's creative path.
Between sessions we'll have a WhatsApp group for celebrating wins, asking for input, sharing upcoming events, and posting artist date ideas you'd like company for.
The final week is co-created. We'll brainstorm together and design a closing session that celebrates what the group has accomplished.
